Starting preschool is a big moment for children and parents alike. For some little ones, it’s pure excitement. For others, those first goodbyes can bring wobbles. At Play B C, we get it. We’re here to support your child (and you!) through every step.
Here are our top tips for easing the transition:

The first goodbye can be the hardest, but it does get easier.
-
Start with a Stay and Play
Before your child’s official start, arrange a stay and play visit. These short, playful sessions help children explore the space and meet new faces with their safe person nearby, building trust from day one.
- Say goodbye
It’s tempting to slip away when your child is busy, but a clear, confident goodbye builds long-term trust. Try something like:
“I’m going now, and I’ll be back to pick you up later. Have fun!” A kiss, a smile, and walking away (even if there are a few tears) helps your child learn that you’ll always come back.
- Expect Wobbles (They’re Normal!)
Some children struggle from day one. Others who didn’t look back at first can often have second thoughts about preschool once the novelty wears off. Even confident children can have off days, especially if they’ve had a long summer or are picking up on new peers feeling unsure. Reassurance, comfort, and support with warm, responsive care will be key.
-
Agree on cuddles and comfort
Your child will be paired with a key person who will be their go-to grown-up. Talk to them about what works to settle your child. At Play B C, we believe relationships are everything. Anyone in the team should step in with care and comfort when needed including cuddles, if that’s what helps.
- Find your drop-off style
Some families like to linger a little longer, others prefer a quick goodbye. Either way, your setting should work with you, keep you posted on how your child settles and always call if they feel they need you.
- Be On Time (It Matters More Than You Think!)
As soon as regular sessions start, be punctual especially at pick-up time. Being there when expected helps your child feel secure.
We know how hard it can be to say goodbye especially if your child is tearful. You won’t be judged. We’ll meet you with compassion, care, and clear communication.
Some children benefit from shorter sessions in the early days and that’s absolutely fine. We work with you to find the right rhythm. We also believe in creating a nurturing, familiar environment with consistent adults and predictable routines which helps children feel safe.
Above all, we believe strong relationships and secure attachments are the foundation for confident learners.

Big transitions, big feelings. Comfort and connection help.
