Wondering if gentle parenting is all no rules, no consequences, and kids running the house?
Looking for a way to be firm but fair with your child?
If so, we just might be able to help.
What gentle parenting really means
Gentle parenting isn’t about letting children do whatever they want. At its heart, it’s about being BOTH kind and firm.
So recognising your child’s feelings (“You’re upset, I can see that”), but still holding the boundary (“We’re not having biscuits before dinner”).
It’s not one or the other, it’s both, together.
What gentle parenting is not:
- no rules – actually, children need boundaries to feel safe and secure
- never saying no – you can absolutely say no, just in a calm, respectful way
- giving in to avoid upset – it is okay for children to feel disappointed, in fact it is an important part of learning
- no discipline – discipline just means teaching and consistency, and young children need both.
What does it look like in real life?
A simple way to think about it is:
1) Connect, you really wanted that toy didn’t you?
2) Boundary, I’m not going to let you snatch it though.
3) Follow-through, stick to your guns consistently and calmly.
If your child is becoming disregulated, keep it simple. It is not the time for lengthy explanations or negotiations.
Why boundaries still matter
Children feel safest when adults are:
- predictable
- consistent
- calmly in charge
When boundaries are unclear or change from moment to moment, children can feel unsure and behaviour might actually become more challenging. So while it might feel “gentle” to give in, especially when everyone’s tired! Over time, clear, consistent boundaries are actually the kindest thing we can offer.
So what is the point?
More than anything, gentle parenting is about helping children learn:
- how to understand their feelings
- how to express themselves
- how to manage frustration and disappointment
- how to behave in a way that works for others too.
All of that doesn’t happen overnight, it’s something we have to guide, model and support over time.
Remember…
You won’t get it right all the time, but you do not have to.
Gentle parenting isn’t about being endlessly calm or never getting frustrated, we are all human, after all! In fact, it’s really important for children to see how we manage those moments ourselves, as they learn how to handle their own feelings by watching us. A key part is how you repair after tricky moments. Stay as consistent as you can and show your child that all feelings are ok, but boundaries must still stand.
