Wondering why our sleep areas do not look especially cosy?
Are they a little more ’no frills’ than you expected?
They are really good questions and you are not the only one to ask them. However, when it comes to sleep in the early years, what looks cosy to us as adults isn’t always what’s safest or best for children.
Safety first… always
Sleep guidance for babies and young children has evolved significantly over the years, and we now know much more about how to keep children safe while they rest. Current research highlights that soft or loose bedding, cuddly toys and cushions can pose a risk, particularly in group settings where close supervision is essential.
There is also increasing focus within updated guidance and sector expectations on creating sleep environments that are clear, simple and safe by design. While this can sometimes look less “cosy” than you might expect, it reflects best practice and a shared commitment across early years settings to prioritise children’s safety above all else.
- Clear and uncluttered
- Calm and well supervised
- Free from potentially dangerous items
- Not too hot.
What about comfort?
Comfort doesn’t come from soft furnishings, it comes from feeling safe, secure and understood. We support this by getting to know each child as an individual, building close, responsive relationships, offering gentle reassurance, and creating familiar, predictable routines that help children settle with confidence.
Getting the balance right
Our sleep spaces may look simple, but they are intentionally designed, shaped by guidance, experience and a deep understanding of what children need. When it comes to sleep, safety matters far more than how a space looks.
Still have questions?
We understand sleeping away from home can feel like a big step, for both children and parents. If you’d like to talk through how we support this at preschool, we’re always happy to chat.
